La Promenade Building

History

La Promenade Building was built in 1972. This 12-storey building is located at 151 Sparks Street, only one block away from the Parliament Buildings.

Before being vacated for renovations, the building was occupied by the House of Commons, Parliamentary Precinct Services and Library of Parliament employees.

La Promenade Building

Building Renovation and Refit

Because of its proximity to Parliament Hill, La Promenade is a perfect choice for interim relocation space needed during the West Block Rehabilitation Program. Member of Parliament offices and support functions located in the West Block will be temporarily relocated to La Promenade so that major building rehabilitation can proceed without disrupting Parliament.

La Promenade was at the end of its life cycle and required a significant upgrade to its exterior envelope and mechanical and electrical systems.

The following work has been completed:

  • insulation of exterior pre-cast walls;
  • replacement of exterior windows.

The following work lies ahead:

  • completion of base building systems and interior fit-up.

Once the rehabilitation is complete, La Promenade will welcome 62 Members of Parliament and provide 3 committee rooms. The new space has been designed to meet the high end use, operational and functional needs of Parliament. It will provide interim space for all of the parliamentary offices displaced from West Block, and supply additional interim space for future East Block and Centre Block functions. The building will serve the long term accommodations needs of Parliament.

To keep the commercial character of Sparks Street, commercial tenants will continue to occupy the ground level.
