1 Wellington Street

1 Wellington Street building

The building at 1 Wellington Street is located just east of Parliament Hill, next to the Rideau Canal. Public Works and Government Services Canada is leasing this building from the National Capital Commission.

The space will support parliamentary operations while the West Block undergoes rehabilitation.

It will also provide parliamentary committee rooms for long-term use.

  • Four committee rooms will be constructed at 1 Wellington Street along with ancillary spaces (e.g., interpretation booths) to support committee functions. This will enable the West Block to be completely emptied in 2010.
  • In order to empty the Parliament Buildings during their rehabilitation and continue to provide long-term committee functions, other committee rooms are also being constructed in the Wellington Building (10) and in La Promenade (3). Parliamentary committee rooms must remain operational while the Parliament Buildings undergo much needed renovations.
  • Committee rooms are being constructed in close proximity to Parliament Hill to allow long-term and uninterrupted operations of Parliament.

These committee rooms will not only replace the ones to be closed down while the West Block is rehabilitated, but they will also meet the Parliamentary partners (Senate and House of Commons) long-term requirements for committee rooms.

Renovation work on 1 Wellington Street involves interior refit such as new partitions, new doors, new floors, mechanical and electrical systems upgrades and much more. Construction work has begun and is to be completed by fall 2010. Thanks to this new space, the West Block will be completely vacated and ready for rehabilitation earlier than anticipated.
